The neonicotinoid thiamethoxam impairs male fertility in solitary bees, Osmia cornuta

چکیده

The ongoing loss of global biodiversity is endangering ecosystem functioning and human food security. While environmental pollutants are well known to reduce fertility, the potential effects common neonicotinoid insecticides on insect fertility remain poorly understood. Here, we show that field-realistic exposure can drastically impact male fertility. In laboratory, female solitary bees Osmia cornuta were exposed four concentrations thiamethoxam measure survival, consumption, sperm traits. Despite males being higher dosages thiamethoxam, females revealed an overall increased hazard rate for survival; suggesting sex-specific differences in toxicological sensitivity. All tested sublethal (i.e., 1.5, 4.5 10 ng g?1) reduced quantity by 57% viability 42% average, with lowest concentration leading a reduction total living 90%. As match estimates pollution, this reveals plausible mechanism population declines, thereby reflecting realistic concern. An immediate required decelerate biodiversity.

The neonicotinoid clothianidin interferes with navigation of the solitary bee Osmia cornuta in a laboratory test.

Pollinating insects provide a vital ecosystem service to crops and wild plants. Exposure to low doses of neonicotinoid insecticides has sub-lethal effects on social pollinators such as bumblebees and honeybees, disturbing their navigation and interfering with their development. Solitary Hymenoptera are also very important ecosystem service providers, but the sub-lethal effects of neonicotinoids...

Cuticular lipids of female solitary bees, Osmia lignaria Say and Megachile rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae).

The cuticular lipids of the cavity-nesting adult female solitary bees, Osmia lignaria Say and Megachile rotundata (F.) (Hymenoptera: Megachilidae), were analyzed by gas chromatography (GC) and combined GC-mass spectrometry. The cuticular lipids of these female bees are mainly consisted of hydrocarbons. For O. lignaria, nearly 64% of the cuticular lipids were C(25)-C(31) mono-alkenes. For M. rot...
